Teaching in Schools

Despite a government vow of free primary education for all, its implementation has been hampered by a lack of facilities and staff - we are working together with projects to educate and feed underprivileged children who are otherwise confined to life on the street.

You can also book any of our Adventure Activities simply by using our online 'basket' facility to help create your KenyanAdventure.

If you would like more information, please give us a call - we'd be happy to help.

Thousands of children across Kenya remain uneducated due to expensive subsidiary fees and travel. Despite a recent vow for every child to have access to a free primary education, its execution has been disrupted by a lack of staff, schools and resources; meaning many are still confined to life on the street or in under-age employment. KenyanAdventure has teamed up with several schools across the country who educate and feed hundreds children on a daily basis whilst providing a safe, positive environment for their pupils through out Teaching English projects.

Your role will be to provide innovative, fun lessons to pupils aged 4-12. You will have the autonomy of planning your classes but have the assistance of a local teacher to help deliver if you require. English, Maths, Art and Music form the foundations of most school curricula.

In addition to your own teaching, you will be encouraged to look after children at break times and help to prepare/serve breakfast and lunch. Many of them come from severely disadvantaged backgrounds and positive role models in their lives are sometimes scarce - your placement may help change that.

Most of the schools KenyanAdventure supports are twinned with churches to encourage a strong moral upbringing in a heavily religious nation.

A Typical Day...

Your role as an English teacher in a school will be at the focal point of education for children living in extremely impoverished areas and who would otherwise have no access to any formal teaching.

You’ll get up at approximately 7.30am before having breakfast and making your way to school for a 8.30am start.

You will deliver your pre-prepared lessons focusing on the core skills of English, Maths, Music and Art appropriate to the age you are teaching (of which you will be notified at your project orientation).

After your morning session, the class will pause for a breaktime before returning to class and having an assembly which may includes songs, prayers and games.

You’ll help other volunteers serve lunch and playing with the kids too before having a well-earned break. The kids will return for a relaxed afternoon lesson before the school day is up at approximately 3pm.

You will have ample opportunity to continue your work by preparing the following day’s activities. This is your opportunity to be creative and deliver your sessions with your own flair and individuality!
