Section 8: Health and Safety
It is important to go to Kenya in the know regarding vaccinations and medical information.
KenyanAdventure.com recommends that you see your GP around six weeks prior to departure as they will be best equipped to inform you of your personal requirements. The following information is a general guide and does not mean you no longer need to seek professional medical advice!!
- You will need to have a Yellow Fever vaccination before leaving for Kenya. Normally, Yellow Fever is not available on the NHS and will cost around £40 at most clinics. It will vaccinate you for up to 10 years, so it's worth it!
- You will need to be vaccinated against Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Polio - though the vast majority of people have already had these injections.
- Finally, it is imperative you take malaria prophylaxis for the duration of your stay. There are three mainstream types of anti-malarials - doxycyclin, malarone and larium - and each vary in cost and the frequency in which you have to take them. It is strongly recommended you consult your GP before deciding which is best for you.
Below are some day-to-day points to bear in mind which will ensure your safety. They are not supposed to be exhaustive, but they keep you informed of things you should know!
- It is strongly recommended that you drink bottled water throughout your entire stay. Bottled water is reasonably priced, particularly if purchased in bulk. A 10 litre bottle - bearing in mind you will need to drink at least two litres a day - can be bought for around £2.
- Some guidebooks/websites suggest that you do not buy 'street' food - fresh fruit and vegetables sold at stalls. If you do choose to purchase them, make sure they are washed thoroughly before hand.
- It is recommended that you purchase insect-repellent with a high level of deet. This contains alcohol that is designed to keep bugs away. Application guidelines come with the bottles.
- Hygiene gel can be purchased from most supermarkets and can be invaluable to use before eating meals/washing. We strongly recommend you pack some in your suitcase before you jet off!
You cannot enjoy yourself if you are consumed in health & safety checks all the time - so just bear them in mind when you are travelling. You are going to enjoy yourself and, although it is important to safeguard against potential health hazards, don't let it get in the way of having a great time!
When you book a KenyanAdventure, you are sent a comprehensive Welcome Pack which further elaborates the importance of staying healthy with further tips to stay safe.
Please note: The preceding information does not constitute as professional advice and it is imperative you book an appointment with a GP/Travel Health Consultant, particularly if this will be your first time in Africa.
