Section 3: Will I Make a Difference?
At KenyanAdventure, we believe we should give back to the communities that allow us into their lives and send volunteers to assist with their projects, which is why every time we arrange a placement, we donate a part of every volunteer's placement fee to spend on operations, sustainability and development. We are one of the only commercial organisations in Europe to do this!
We define this as ecotourism - tourism which has a positive impact on the communities it involves.
Many volunteer travel companies claim they do not offer financial support to actually benefit the project's long-term 'sustainability' to prevent reliance on aid. Well, we think the financial aid we provide actually improves -
- Operational conditions of the project(s)
- Living standards / quality of life
- Opportunity for employment
Development
We do not tell the projects where donation money must be spent - they are perfectly capable of allocating donation money themselves. Once we have found a worthy project of our support, we let the people who know the project best, make the important decisions. We know donation money is used wisely. In fact, just one volunteer working with KenyanAdventure for only two weeks, can fund one of -
- 500 school meals for kids on a Teaching English project.
- A month's supply of water at a school on a Community Work project.
- A small school's average monthly hospital bill on a Healthcare project.
- Foundations for a permanent home on a Building project.
- Enough fertilizer to treat three square acres of land on a Conservation project.
- In addition, the humanitarian support provided directly by volunteers helps
support the operation and development of projects.
